Our Mission:
Retirees for Democracy (R4D) is a nonpartisan coalition of retired Americans solely dedicated to re-establishing, strengthening, and protecting democracy in the United States.
We stand apart from other pro-democracy organizations by focusing exclusively on defending democratic principles—without endorsing or opposing unrelated or divisive political issues.
Drawing on decades of experience, civic insight, and a deep sense of responsibility to future generations, R4D mobilizes retired Americans to take coordinated and consequential action against the rising tide of authoritarianism.
R4D is committed to:
- Reverse America’s slide into authoritarianism
- Defend the Constitution, voting rights, free press, and academic freedom
- Protect due process for every individual
- Hold the President to the same ethical and legal standards as all federal employees
- Prioritize truth and science as the foundation of sound government policy
- Empower citizens with the knowledge and tools to defend and participate in democracy
Why Now?
Today’s retirees grew up believing our democracy was strong and indestructible. We now understand that democracy is fragile. It is not self-sustaining—it must be nurtured and defended with courage and conviction.
Fascism has come to America. It is no longer a distant threat—it is our new reality.
Across America, individuals are being detained by unaccountable government agents who act as their jailer, prosecutor, judge, jury, and executioner—denied legal counsel, due process, and even contact with their families. In blatant disregard of court orders, they are being secretly deported to foreign detention facilities—placing them beyond the reach of their Constitutional rights. Concurrently, Trump’s threats of retribution have pressured our politicians, lawyers, judges, journalists, and academics to abandon the ethical foundations of democracy, law, journalism, and intellectual inquiry—principles vital to a democratic society.
This is not the America forged through revolution, and improved by generations of Americans who have expanded its promise through protest, civic service, and sacrifice. It is not the America our parents and grandparents defended in war and rebuilt in peace. And it is certainly not the America we grew up believing in—nor the one we hope to bequeath to our children.
What we face today is deeply malicious, dangerously unaccountable, and wholly un-American. If we do not confront this slide into autocracy now, our silence will be its accomplice—a millstone we will carry for the rest of our lives, and a stain on our legacy.
We believe that America’s democracy is a legacy that must be defended—not only for our nation, but for the world, for history, and most importantly, for our children and grandchildren.
A Call to Retirees
Retirees are uniquely positioned to help restore democracy in America.
We are Seasoned—having stood on the front lines of protest in the 1960s and ’70s, fighting for civil rights, women’s rights, and environmental justice.
We are Principled—having witnessed the triumphs born of an equitable democracy, we are committed to ensuring that truth and justice remain the foundation of America’s democracy.
We are Engaged—bringing the time, energy, and wisdom of lived experience. And as the nation’s most reliable voting bloc, we are uniquely positioned to help restore America’s democracy.
We, America’s seniors, are the voice in the ear of our children and grandchildren—the voice that calmed their fears, the memory that gave them hope, the story that taught them right from wrong. Let’s use that superpower to help rebuild the democracy they’ll inherit.
Stand with us—while we still have the power to rebuild America’s democracy!

If you still believe America is a democracy…
If you still believe America is a democracy, read this or watch ProPublica’s videos. These videos show Trump’s armed enforcers dragging people out of their cars without explanation, often refusing to show any identification that proves they are legitimate law enforcement. Many of those taken away will be deported with no real chance to contest their arrest in court — a Constitutional right guaranteed to every person, citizen and non-citizen alike.
This is how fascist regimes operate. It’s how enslaved people were terrorized in America. But it is not how America has worked in my lifetime, my parents’ lifetime, nor in my grandparents’ lifetimes; not since the Civil War.
Think you’re safe? Maybe — if you’re a conservative, white, Christian male. For everyone else, even the wealthy, safety is an illusion, as Pastor Martin Niemöller’s poem remains true today: “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a socialist…”
