Novel Ideas to Save Our Democracy and Reawaken the American Dream

The 2.5-century American experiment as a representative democracy has been progressively failing over the last several decades as it failed to address a litany of serious existential crises:

  • The man-made destruction of our climate;
  • The concentration of wealth and political power in the hands of a few;
  • The loss of the American Dream;
  • A two-tiered justice system—one for the wealthy, another for everyone else.

The failure of our government to meet the needs of average Americans has created distrust in the body politic and is assuredly one of the primary reasons for the loss of our democracy.

Even if America eventually moves past its current authoritarianism, returning to the status quo ante would be a recipe for another failure. The “normal” of our last several decades is the reason we are in the crisis of today.

To build a democracy and government that serves all Americans, we must entertain brazen ideas that have, until now, been excluded from the national dialogue.

Here are a few of my ideas:

Democracy Cannot Survive The Wealth-Power Feedback Loop

Immense wealth is used to convince our politicians to modify our laws so the extremely wealthy can accumulate yet more wealth and power: the Wealth-Power Feedback Loop.

To preserve democracy, we must break this feedback loop. That can only be accomplished by establishing a wealth ceiling that is low enough to ensure that no individual has the resources to disproportionately influence our government, yet high enough to encourage innovation and allow for a lavish lifestyle.

A Democracy That Works for “We the People:” A Blueprint for Structural Reform

Video YouTube (5 minute)

By restructuring the Supreme Court, capping wealth, and implementing a wealth tax, we can eliminate taxes on 90% of Americans, create a government that works, and re-awaken the American Dream for everyone.

The Corporate Death Penalty: Personhood Must Carry a Capital Consequence

IHaveAnIdea.us/cdp/

As the Supreme Court has ruled corporations are legally “people,” corporations must be subject to the same moral weight of the law as applies to a natural person. When a corporation maliciously or with gross negligence takes human lives, rationality demands it be judicially dissolved.

Massachusetts’ Final Bulwark: A Proactive Defense Against the Authoritarian Tide

IHaveAnIdea.us/AuthoritarianTide/

The Massachusetts Constitution offers legally enforceable and stronger protections than its federal counterpart. Our states must leverage these state-level tools to shield residents from federal overreach that threatens public health and safety.

Tax Billionaire’s Wealth – Free the 95%

IHaveAnIdea.us/TaxWealth/

The ultra-wealthy use money to buy political power and bend democracy to serve their needs. We can create a tax structure that imposes a wealth ceiling—a maximum wealth threshold that prevents any single billionaire from effectively purchasing a president, judge, or legislator.

A Rational Revision of Capitalism

IHaveAnIdea.us/CapitalismRevised/

America’s judicial system requires that an injury occur before a company can be held accountable for a flawed design. I propose a new market incentive that rewards companies for proactively disclosing product risks by allowing them to trade radical transparency for reduced legal liability.

Unbridled Capitalism Threatens Our Health, Wealth, Education, Democracy, Planet, and Our Future

IHaveAnIdea.us/capitalism/

Left unchecked, unbridled capitalism has and will bring death to Americans, further exacerbate fiscal inequity, lead to the concentration of immense financial and political power in the hands of several dozen Americans, and then destroy America’s democracy. It is time for America to rethink its reverence for unbridled capitalism. Thoughtful reforms can preserve capitalism’s strengths while protecting society from its excesses.

United We Fall, Divided We (One of Us) Stand

IHaveAnIdea.us/UnitedWeFall/

Fifty years of political stalemate have proven that “Red” and “Blue” America are moving in opposite directions. A mutually agreeable dissolution into two separate, culturally homogeneous entities may be the only way to allow at least one of these societies to build a functioning, effective government.

A House of 8,300 Representatives Would End Gerrymandering, Reduce Big Money Politics, and Increase Americans Trust of Federal Institutions

IHaveAnIdea.us/8300HouseReps/

The Founders intended for the House of Representatives to be close to the people. By shifting from one representative per 760,000 constituents to one per 40,000, we would render gerrymandering impossible, dilute the power of big money, and restore the lost bond between the citizen and the state.

Massachusetts Must Prioritize Health Over Supreme Court Edicts

IHaveAnIdea.us/bumpstock/

Massachusetts, a national leader in healthcare, must set a national example for the country by prioritizing Massachusetts’ values over irrational and unhealthy Supreme Court edicts will assuredly compromise the health and longevity of our residents.

Handcuff Our Rogue Supreme Court

IHaveAnIdea.us/unconstitutionaljustices/

If Massachusetts continues to play by the old and now defunct politico-judicial rules, we should expect to see many unnecessary American deaths.

Our Illegitimate, Illogical, and UnAmerican Supreme Court

IHaveAnIdea.us/supremecourt/

A confederation of Blue State Governors should immediately announce that their States will prioritize the health, safety, welfare, citizenship, and education of their citizens above all other issues; and should the US Supreme Court impose a mandate which interferes with the Governor’s responsibilities to protect the residents of their State, then the Governor will use his/her authority to prevent the Supreme Court from adversely impacting the State’s residents, even if that means ignoring the Court’s ruling.
